© Food & Drink Guide Where shares were once bought and sold, you can now arrange the purchase of delights such as salmon cooked with mustard seeds and coconut, or whole sea bream in an aromatic broth. After nearly 150 years of active trading, Bristol Stock Exchange closed its doors for the last time in March 1991 and reopened in 1999 as the Old India a high-class Indian restaurant offering authentic Indian cuisine served in classic surroundings. The owners vision was to offer the real cuisine of the mogul kings and princes with contemporary style. Specialities include spinach and mashed potato patties with cheese and mustard seeds, and crab masala and lamb chops tenderised in pomegranate juice. A bit better, perhaps, than dry old stocks and shares. The impressive mahogany-panelled, grade-II-listed building has not changed much during its conversion to an Indian restaurant. The owners have echoed the work of British Empire architects in the old cities of India, and have managed to create a unique fusion of traditional Indian architecture with details from the Western classical style, creating a grand yet comfortable atmosphere that fits perfectly with the style of food on your plate. Tuck into the likes of spiced roasted lean mince lamb kebabs with coriander leaves to start, or pan-fried baby potatoes tossed with chat masala spices. Main courses include a range of Indian favourites including chicken tikka masala in a subtle sauce and rogan josh made with the tenderest lamb plus some rarer concoctions. Try a whole fresh sea bream in a rich Bengali-style sauce, or a hearty jugalbandi tandoori a sizzling platter comprising lamb chops, tandoori chicken, sheek kebab and jumbo prawns. Vegetarians can enjoy dishes such as bagar-e-begun aubergines and baby potatoes in a smooth sauce of peanut, yoghurt and tamarind. A selection of rices, sides and bread provide ideal complements to your meal. If experiencing the grandeur and deliciousness of yesteryears India for the evening sounds like your idea of heaven, look no further than this stunning restaurant in the heart of Bristols city centre you wont be disappointed.
