In Bristol, Browns occupies the former Art Gallery next to the museum in the grand shadow of Bristol University at the top of Park Street, and Browns Bath is opposite the Abbey, just a short walk from the Roman Baths. We were in Bristol for the day, so chose to have lunch there. Walking up the steps and through the doors we were immediately struck by its cavernous size and classic decor. Polished wood, exposed stonework, lush greenery and subtle lighting create a sense of stylish comfort and anticipation in a setting this good the food is bound to follow suit. We were not disappointed. After being shown to our table and tended to by our friendly waiter, we perused the main menu. A selection of starters, mains, fish and pasta was on offer, as well as some tempting specials. I started with avocado and crab salad, a meal in itself, with half an avocado filled with creamy crab and creme fraiche alongside a heap of fresh leaves. My main was the fish of the day, a whole grilled rainbow trout, coral-pink and delicate, on a bed of the freshest salsa I have ever tasted. My vegetarian companion was delighted with the amount of options she had, and was glad to be spoilt for choice. After starting with slow-roasted peppers, sweet and light, she chose a dish of roasted Mediterranean vegetables in a shallot and thyme pastry case. I couldnt resist a taste and thought the balance and intensity of the tomato sauce was just perfect. The dessert menu tempted us with the special of the day, apple pie and ice cream, so we decided to share a piece over coffee. The smell of the cinnamon hit us well before the dish was placed down, and the pie was warm and delicious with a melt-in-the-mouth crust. Eating at Browns is a classy yet informal affair, with sublime unfussy food and great service classic restaurants in perfect locations.
