46 Flixton Road Urmston, Manchester M41 5AB
© Food & Drink Guide Decked out in muted brown livery and with an understated interior designed to relax not intimidate, Isinglass is a find in out-of-the way Urmston. One village along from Chorlton, Urmston may have period properties, but was not noted for its food, until now. A former bakehouse, Isinglass has made a culinary name for revamped English food, much of which is sourced from the lush countryside around Manchester.Focusing on the use of local produce before many others, Isinglass won Metrolife Restaurant of the Year 2005, with chef/owner Lisa Walker making off with the coveted City Life Chef of the Year in 2005.On the night we dined, I opted for rare-breed ham, mustard seed and parsley terrine with home-made piccalilli, then struggled to choose between the hay-baked citrus lamb shank, the rabbit burger and the belly pork. My vegan dining companion opted for burdock, sorrel and gruel fritters with Hendersons relish to start, and then had a tricky time choosing between specially-grown heritage veggies and crimini mushrooms, pearl barley and chestnuts with fried garlic semolina cake (she settled on the latter, by the way).A private dining room for up to 30 people is available. The restaurant can be hired for private meetings or celebrations during the day.
Opening hours: Tues-Thurs 6pm-10.30pm, Fri- Sun noon-4.30pm

Isinglass is a truly English restaurant, with an ever-changing and ever-fresh menu made up of natural food grown and reared in the lush countryside surrounding Manchester. Whether it's Chat Moss Salad in summer or Slow-Cooked Boiled Beef in winter, each dish is cooked to enhance, rather than mask, the flavour of the ingredients, proving that food tastes bests when sourced from the fields, not a factory. Peacefully situated in Urmston, just a few minutes away from Chorlton, the relaxing atmosphere of Isinglass is ideal for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city centre life. Simply decorated in a period townhouse, formerly a bakery, with high ceilings, wood floors and original fireplaces, the feel and food of this restaurant inspires memories of a bygone age and always satisfies each diner.
