Oxford Road, Manchester M1 7ED
© Food & Drink Guide Translating literally as Danish public house, Kro does exactly what it says above the door Manchester may not be a Danish village, but these venues have all the qualities and comforts of their namesake, offering good food, good beer and a warm welcome to everyone. Kro is a vision brought into being by the Ruby family from Denmark, who opened the first Kro Bar on Oxford Road in 1999. They converted a beautiful grade-II-listed building with the aim of providing a smart yet comfortable environment and their objectives were perfectly realised. It won City Life Bar of the Year in 2000 and has continued to prove extremely popular. The owners pride themselves on the Danish classics they offer, and currently on the ever-changing menu youll find pork schnitzel, a traditional Danish dish of breaded pork, fried until golden and served on a fresh salad topped with a fried egg. Also available are delicious vegetarian choices such as spicy vegetable fajitas, plus an extensive selection of snacks and salads, including traditional Danish open sandwiches try the delicious smoked salmon with asparagus, served on a buttered bloomer and garnished with capers, lemon and dill. Following the continuing success of the original Kro Bar, Kro2 was opened, retaining the all-important Danish influence while giving a slightly different slant on the theme. Kro2 houses a stylish restaurant, where you can sample the excellent la carte menu, as well as a bar area where you can take full advantage of the wide variety of beers, wines and spirits. This fantastic follow-up is by no means a secondary venue, winning City Life Bar of the Year for itself in 2002 and leading to the opening of the biggest and boldest Kro experience to date Kro Piccadilly. This is very possibly one of the most fantastic bars in Manchester, with food and service to match. It opens early for breakfast and late in the evening for those celebratory nights with friends, and its restaurant is available for remarkable fine dining. Its striking exterior creates an impression of chic elegance that is upheld throughout diners can enjoy some alfresco food and drink in the sunshine or find a table in the stunningly decorated interior, with its stylish woods, whites and modern lighting. Kro really does have all bases covered, with the Old Abbey Inn providing the atmosphere of a country pub in the heart of the city and the brand-spanking new Kro in the suburbs offering an alternative destination in Heaton Moor. Wherever in Manchester you find yourself, you are thankfully never too far from a welcoming, award-winning Kro.
