© Food & Drink Guide Situated on historic Fossgate in the heart of York this intimate and classy bistro serves up a Mediterranean influenced menu with only the highest quality, locally-sourced ingredients. Fully licensed, Masons is a decidedly grown up venue, frequented by couples and smallish groups.Upon our arrival we were greeted by owner Stuart Hall who showed us to a table by the bar. While soft jazz music wafted through the air we browsed the menu, struggling to choose from the mouth-watering options available. The arrival of a specials board further complicated matters but we were eventually able to decide on the first course. I chose fried patties of potato and feta with a mushroom sauce (5.50) while my partner enjoyed seared king scallops with a warm salad of boudin noir, smoked slow-roasted vine cherry tomatoes and a caper and nut brown butter (7.50). The rich salty feta was perfectly complemented by the creamy mushrooms a very positive start. The mains were equally as enjoyable. I chose salt and pepper roasted free range chicken in a champagne and morel cream sauce with boulangere potatoes (14.50) and my partner selected kleftiko of lamb, a quarter shoulder of lamb slow braised in lemon juice, oregano, garlic and olive oil served in braising juices (18.50). Both dishes came with a selection of roasted vegetables and duck fat roasted potatoes. The meat was tender and beautifully prepared while the accompanying vegetables were full of flavour.The portions were generous and although by now we were starting to feel a little full we were unable to resist the tempting desserts. We opted to share a raspberry brle tart (5.50), which can only be described as perfection. All in all our visit to Masons was a very enjoyable experience, and one that I intend to repeat very soon.
