Conveniently situated near to the new Highcross shopping centre and close to the historic Guildhall and cathedral, this is the ideal venue for lunch or an early evening meal. Dating back to the 18th Century, The Globe is steeped in tradition: it was once used by farmers at hiring fairs to recruit workers and, during the 19th Century, framework knitters would gather to sell their goods. Thanks to landlord Hugh Kerr, the pub retains its traditional features whilst being given a new lease of life.The food menu offers a greatly varied selection, from homemade pie, lasagne and chilli to sandwiches and snacks for those with lighter appetites. Warm nachos covered in a generous topping of spicy salsa and cheese, accompanied by guacamole and a sour cream dip, was my starter of choice. Also available for two or four people to share, and with the optional extra of a portion of chilli, the selection of contrasting flavours made this a perfect way to kick things off. My companion wisely chose the seasoned potato wedges topped with generous portions of both cheese and bacon and was not in the least bit disappointed.For the main course, my companion would not stop singing the praises of his locally sourced sausages covered in a rich, dark onion gravy and accompanied by creamy mashed potato and peas, which made me begin to doubt the wisdom of my choice of Mexican chicken. However, my fears were put to rest when I tasted the tender and succulent chicken breast, topped with salsa, bacon and melted cheese. A side helping of golden, crispy steak chips and a side salad with pesto dressing provided an accomplished accompaniment positively delicious. We rounded things off with beautifully presented and fresh-tasting homemade raspberry cheesecake the perfect ending.If youre looking for a real classic pub offering, both tradition and good value are on offer at The Globe.
