© Food & Drink Guide Petit Paris is all about authenticity. From chequered cloths and vintage glassware on the tables, to the retro signs and billboards on the whitewashed walls, the entire dining experience is a near perfect example of the French bistrot. When we arrived, our coats were taken and whisked away before we were shown to our table. Once there, our French waitress Lucy explained the very reasonable lunch deals. One course plus coffee for a mere 6.90 is inarguably a very affordable meal, but we opted to try items from both the main la carte menu and the specials board. To start, my companion chose the mussels served in a Provencal sauce. Arriving in a traditional pot, they were beautifully textured and partnered perfectly with the rustic sauce. I on the other hand decided to be a little more adventurous and went for that most Gallic of delicacies, escargot. Served with a garlic, parsley and Pernod butter, this French staple was a first for me but one I was glad to have tried. The snails were excellently cooked, with none of the grit that can be associated with such a dish, while the rich sauce was a great accompaniment. After the excitement of the starters, we were looking forward to the familiarity of the mains. My friend went for the meaty double act of Toulouse sausage and duck confit, while I opted for the lighter choice of sea bass served with a delicious Dijon mustard sauce on a bed of sauted potatoes. Both meals were presented with panache and my fish in particular simply melted in the mouth. Finally, for dessert, we chose the creme brule and the chocolate tart, which the menu proudly boasts as being so good that they have never been able to remove it. The niceties of the smooth custard base and crispy shell of the creme brule are irrelevant when something tastes this good. So, for some of the best French cuisine outside of France, try Petit Paris. With great food, ambience and attentive staff, it will be an experience you wont forget in a hurry.
