Certainly one of Bristols best restaurants, Bells Diner is where you come for immaculate service and a gastronomic parade. Owner Christopher Wicks (chef profile page 77) says that his food is unclassifiable, and, when you consider creations like anchovy foam, cucumber bavarois and beetroot and cream lollipops, possibly youll understand why. The funky blue front room with its beautiful polished wood floor and racks of wine hosts a collection of decanters, antique bottles and old signs a homage to its former life as a grocery shop. The back room is more modern and chic, with absolute white walls, crisp linen-covered tables and artful lighting. Choose from the la carte or tasting menu and an enviable wine list. Starters are priced between 6 and 10.50, mains from 15 to 19.50, and the eight-course tasting menu is 45. I started with smoked eel, green peppercorn and beetroot jelly with horseradish ice cream and bacon crisp, which was gorgeous. For a main course I chose pork cheek and belly with bok choy, shiitake and tomato ketchup. I loved that the pork was slightly crispy on the outside and very moist inside, and I found the bok choy inventive as well as delicious. Alongside the desserts, of which I chose the perfect black olive feuillata, creme Catalan and strawberries, there is a considerable listing of digestifs and dessert wines to seal your meal. Immaculate is truly the only word I can think of to describe the service. At Bells you know youre being taken care of every single step of the way. If you have not yet discovered this fantastic restaurant, treat yourself and give it a go. It may well be the best dining experience you have ever had.
