Despite its urban location near the heart of Sheffield, The Robin Hood at Stannington cleverly poses as a rural retreat. Hidden away right at the top of a winding tree-lined avenue, the pub appears as if by magic, just at the point you think you may have taken a wrong turning. The stone-flagged dining area has a comfortable, homely feel and is run by manager Carl Grayson and head chef Peter Wilkinson. In the time they have been at The Robin Hood they have built up a reputation for providing fantastic food at reasonable prices. Their menu has an excellent choice of dishes to suit every taste and is complemented by an extensive wine list, plus a bar stocked with a selection of real ales. The pair are committed to using local produce wherever possible and this shows in the taste and quality of the dishes, providing uncomplicated yet creative cuisine that is a delight to both the eye and the palate. With such a mouth-watering selection, we had difficulty deciding what to sample. My wife started with grilled goats cheese and Mediterranean vegetable bruschetta with pesto, while I opted for the smoked sausage, spinach and French cheese tartiflette (baked in a pot) with roasted garlic bread. Both were excellently prepared, extremely well presented and paved the way for the superb main courses we had chosen. Chicken breast wrapped in bacon, stuffed with cheese, served with mashed potato, sauted spinach and a light sauce, and an 8oz beefburger with smoked cheese on dressed ciabatta, chips and onion rings. To finish off a perfect evening we enjoyed desserts of fruit crumble with vanilla ice cream and cheesecake and sorbet with aromatic coffee. With food and service of the quality we experienced, its no surprise to learn that The Robin Hood is proving an increasingly popular destination for both locals and tourists alike, buzzing with the happy chatter of a well-satisfied clientele.
